What is Reiki?

Reiki is the Japanese word for Universal Life Force Energy. It is a natural healing art using universal life energy to promote balance, healing and consciousness. Reiki supports and accelerates the body’s own natural ability to heal itself. It loosens up blocked energy and promotes a state of relaxation. It revitalises and balances body, mind and spirit and cleanses the body of toxins. Reiki does not depend on a belief system and works on plants and animals.

Reiki originated in Tibet some 2,500 years ago. It was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian Theologian, in the mid-1800s. After this discovery, he spent the rest of his life teaching this method of natural healing.

What is a treatment like ?

In a Reiki healing session, the practitioner’s hands are placed lightly on or over the client’s body, moving from one chakra to the next, to transmit healing. The client usually lies on a plinth. It is not necessary to remove any clothing. The practitioner does not consciously direct the energy in any way. The energy goes to the area where it is most needed by the recipient. Each individual experiences the energy in a unique way. The client may feel a kind of flowing sensation which is often combined with a sensation of warmth.

Most people receiving Reiki relax during the treatment and may even fall asleep, but this makes no difference to the effects of the treatment. On other occasions, old and unresolved experiences may become conscious again, and a release of emotion may occur. A series of treatments will bring about dissolution of inner barriers which have blocked a person’s holistic growth, because Reiki works on all levels. Most treatments last for about 40 minutes. Appointments are generally for an hour.
